Those who introduce such questions would prove no more gracious as companions than the crane and the fox in Aesop’s fable. The fox poured a rich pea soup over a flat stone, vexing the crane and making her a laughingstock, for the liquid soup eluded her slender beak. In her turn, the crane invited the fox to dinner and served the meal in a flask with a long, narrow neck. She could easily lower her beak into it and enjoy the food, while the fox, unable to do so, received a fitting return for her hospitality.

So too, when philosophers at a drinking party plunge into subtle questions of dialectic and vex the company, who cannot follow them, and the others in turn launch into songs, foolish tales, and coarse, vulgar talk, the very purpose of convivial fellowship is lost, and Dionysus is insulted.
