(Those who try to play both sides usually earn the contempt of both.) The Eagle and the Lion held a grand conference to settle between themselves certain matters of government. The Eagle complained bitterly 5 of the bat, saying: “How long must this wretched creature keep stirring up trouble between us? He mingles with my birds, passing himself off as one of them, 10 and offers various reasons, chiefly his power of flight. Yet whenever it suits him, he says: ‘I have a snout, not a beak. How can you call me a bird? 15 Why, I am a four-footed beast.’ Among my subjects he speaks ill of the beasts of your empire; and when he lives among them, he speaks ill of the birds in turn.” 20 “Very well,” said the Lion. “I swear that he shall never enter my kingdoms again.” “Nor mine, still less,” replied the Eagle. Ever since, alone, 25 we see him venture out at night; for neither winged nor four-footed creatures will have such a companion now. You literary bats, who deal in both feathers and fur, 30 if you wish to live among everyone, look at yourselves in this mirror.
