In the days of Wu, there stood a catalpa tree of immense girth, with leaves more than ten feet across and branches spreading over several mu of land. The King of Wu had it felled to make a boat, and ordered thirty boys and girls to haul it to the water. The boat shot into the water of its own accord, and all the children drowned. To this day, chants and cries urging the haulers onward can sometimes be heard from the depths of the pool.
