Dong Zhongshu was lecturing and reciting behind a lowered curtain when a visitor came to call. Dong knew that this was no ordinary guest. The visitor remarked, “It is about to rain.” Dong teased him, saying, “Those that live in nests know the wind; those that live in burrows know the rain. If you are neither a fox nor a wildcat, you must be a little field mouse.” The visitor thereupon changed into an old wildcat.
