In the twenty-first year of Duke Xiao of Qin, a horse gave birth to a human. In the twentieth year of King Zhao, a stallion gave birth to a foal and died. Liu Xiang regarded both as calamities involving horses. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When regional lords divide sovereign authority among themselves, the portent is a stallion giving birth. When there is no Son of Heaven above and the feudal lords wage war upon one another, the portent is a horse giving birth to a human.”
