Long ago in China, as Confucius was traveling along a road, he met a child of about eight. The child asked him, “Which is farther away: the place where the sun sets, or Luoyang?” Confucius replied, “The place where the sun sets is far away; Luoyang is near.” The child said, “But I can see the places where the sun rises and sets, while I have never seen Luoyang. So I think the place where the sun rises must be near, and Luoyang far away.” Confucius marveled at the child’s wisdom. People said that, since no one else would venture to challenge Confucius with such a question, this must have been no ordinary child.
