This, too, is a tale of long ago. Lord Ōnijō was fond of Koshikibu no Naishi, though his visits to her had grown infrequent. Then he fell gravely ill. A long time passed before he recovered, and when at last he went to visit Shōtōmon-in, Koshikibu was sitting in the attendants’ room. As he was leaving, he passed her and said, “Why did you not come to see me when I was near death?” She caught the hem of his court robe to stop him and replied, “I grieved indeed, until I nearly died—for mine was not a place from which I could go openly to visit you.” Perhaps he could no longer contain his feelings, for he gathered her into his arms, carried her to her chamber, and lay down with her.
