A farmer who had grown old in the countryside without ever having set foot in a city begged his family to let him see one. They harnessed some little donkeys, helped him into the cart, and told him to drive there on his own. As he went along, a violent storm swept in and darkness fell. The donkeys strayed from the road and carried the old man to the edge of a precipice. Just as he was about to plunge over, he cried, “O Zeus, what wrong have I ever done you, that I should perish so senselessly—and not through noble horses or fine mules, but through the most wretched little donkeys?”
