Cranes were feeding on a farmer’s field, newly sown with wheat. For a long time he drove them off by swinging an empty sling and frightening them away. But when they saw that he was slinging nothing but air, they began to scorn him and would no longer flee. At last, instead of doing as he had before, he hurled stones and struck down most of them. As the survivors abandoned the field, they cried to one another, “Let us flee to the land of the Pygmies! This man, it seems, is no longer content to frighten us; now he is beginning to act!” The fable teaches that those who do wrong should heed warnings given in words, lest they learn too late the pain of warnings enforced by deeds.
