Kdor zna, dobi dve

There once were an uncle and a nephew, and one day the nephew said to his uncle, “Come, Uncle, let us go raiding.” The uncle agreed, and off they went. As they walked along the road, they overtook a man leading two sheep on a rope. Then the nephew said to his uncle, “Let us steal those two sheep.” And his uncle answered, “How in the world can we steal them when he is leading them on a rope?” But the nephew said, “We shall steal them easily enough. Just leave it to me.” Then he hurried on ahead, took off one of his leather shoes, and tossed it onto the road where the man with the sheep would pass, then hid by the roadside. When the man driving the two sheep came along, he picked up the shoe, then threw it down again, saying, “What use is one shoe to me?” Hearing this, the nephew ran ahead once more, took off his other shoe, and tossed it onto the road, then hid again. When the man with the sheep came along and saw another shoe, he regretted not having taken the first, so he tied his two sheep to a tree beside the road and went back to fetch it, so that he would have the pair. Meanwhile, | the nephew crept up, untied the two sheep, and led them away to his uncle. After that, the uncle and nephew went on with their raiding. As they walked along, they saw a man ploughing a field with two oxen. Then the nephew said to his uncle, “Let us steal one of his oxen from the plough.” And his uncle answered, “How in the world can we steal an ox right before the man’s eyes?” But he said, “We shall steal it easily enough. Just go and sit on that rock and keep calling out, ‘I wonder!’ Then, when he comes over to ask what you are wondering at, tell him you wonder at his ploughing with only one ox.” The uncle did as his nephew told him, went and sat on the rock, and began calling out, “I wonder! I wonder!” When the man ploughing had had enough of listening to him, he halted his oxen, went over, and asked, “What in the world are you wondering at?” And the uncle answered from his rock, “I wonder at your ploughing with only one ox.” The ploughman replied, “I am not ploughing with one, but with two.” Then he hurried back to the plough to see whether both his oxen were there, only to find that the nephew had crept up and stolen an ox from the plough. So the uncle and nephew drove off an ox and two sheep. Going on from there, they came to a cave. There they stopped, slaughtered one of the sheep, skinned it, and put it on to roast. Once it was roasted, the uncle said to his nephew, “Let us eat.” But the nephew answered, “We shall, | Uncle, as soon as it cools a little. In the meantime, let us try to frighten each other, and whoever frightens the other shall begin eating first.” The uncle agreed, went out in front of the cave, and began bellowing, “Boo! Boo! Boo!” But the nephew answered from inside the cave, “Your bellowing does not frighten me. It is you, Uncle.” Then the uncle went inside, and the nephew went out, took the slaughtered sheep’s skin, blew it up, and began beating it with a stick, crying, “Oh, for God’s sake! It was not me—it was my uncle!” When the uncle heard this inside the cave, he took fright, thinking that the man whose sheep they had stolen had come after them. He fled home by another way, empty-handed, and so everything was left to the nephew. — The clever man gets a double share.
