Kdor manj prosi, več dobi
There were once three brothers who had nothing in all the world but a single pear tree. They took turns guarding it: one would stay by the tree while the other two went out to work for wages. One day God sent an angel to see how the brothers were living, and, if they were in want, to give them a better livelihood. | When the angel of God came down to earth, he took the form of a beggar, went up to the brother guarding the tree, and asked him for a pear. The brother picked one from his own share and gave it to him, saying, “Here is one of my pears. I cannot give you any of my brothers’.” The angel thanked him and went away. The next day, when the second brother stayed to guard the tree, the angel came again and asked him for a pear. He too picked one from his own share and gave it to him, saying, “Here is one of my pears. I cannot give you any of my brothers’.” The angel thanked him too and went away. When it was the third brother’s turn to guard the tree, the angel came again and asked him for a pear as well. He too picked one from his own share and gave it to him, saying, “Here is one of my pears. I cannot give you any of my brothers’.” On the fourth day, the angel took the form of a monk and came early in the morning, when all three were at home. He said to them, “Come with me, and I shall give you a better livelihood.” They followed him without a word. When they came to a great stream, its waters rushing and roaring, the angel asked the eldest brother, “What would you wish to have?” He answered, “I wish all this water were wine, and that it were mine.” The angel made the sign of the cross with his staff, and wine began to flow instead of water. There were casks being made, wine being poured, people at work—a whole village of them. Then the angel left him there, saying, “There is what you | wished for. Now make your living.” He took the other two brothers and went on with them. They came to a field so thick with pigeons that the birds covered it from end to end. Then the angel asked the middle brother, “What would you wish for now?” He answered, “I wish all those birds were sheep, and that they were mine.” The angel of God made the sign of the cross over the field with his staff, and sheep stood everywhere in place of the pigeons. There were dairy huts, with some women milking the flock, others pouring out the milk, others skimming off the cream, others making cheese, and still others melting butter. A slaughterhouse sprang up as well, with some people cutting meat, others weighing it, and others taking money—people at work, a whole village of them. Then the angel said to him, “There is what you wished for.” He took the youngest brother and went on across the field with him, asking, “And what would you like?” He answered, “I would ask for nothing but that God should grant me a wife of true Christian blood.” Then the angel said, “Oh, that is hard to find. There are only three in all the world: two are married women, and one is a maiden, and she already has two suitors.” After travelling for a long time, they came to a city where there lived an emperor whose daughter was of true Christian blood. As soon as they reached the city, they went to the emperor to ask for his daughter’s hand. When they arrived, two emperors were already there seeking her hand, and had laid their apples on the table. So they set their own apple beside the others. When the emperor saw them, he said to everyone gathered there, “What are we to do now? Those men are emperors, while these look like beggars beside | them.” Then the angel said, “Do you know what we should do? Let us settle it this way: let the maiden take three vines and plant them in the garden, choosing one for each suitor as she pleases. Whichever man’s vine bears grapes tomorrow shall have the maiden for his wife.” They all agreed. The maiden planted three vines in the garden and assigned one to each man. In the morning, there were grapes on the poor man’s vine. The emperor had no choice but to give his daughter to the youngest brother, and they went straight to church and were married. After the wedding, the angel led them into a forest and left them there, and they lived in the forest for a year. When the year was over, God said to the angel again, “Go and see how those poor men are living. If they are in want, give them a better livelihood.” When the angel came down to earth, he once more took the form of a beggar and went to the brother whose stream flowed with wine. He asked him for a cup of wine, but the man turned him away, saying, “If I gave a cup of wine to everyone, there would be none left.” When the angel heard this, he made the sign of the cross with his staff, and the stream flowed with water as before. Then he said to the brother, “This is not for you. Go back to the pear tree and guard it.” The angel went away and came to the second brother, whose sheep covered the field, and asked him for a slice of cheese. But he turned him away, saying, “If I handed out a slice of cheese to everyone, there would be none left.” When the angel heard this, he made the sign of the cross | with his staff, and the sheep turned into pigeons and flew up into the air. Then he said to the brother, “This is not for you. Go back to the pear tree and guard it.” Last of all, the angel went to the youngest brother to see how he was living. When he arrived, he found him living in poverty with his wife in a little hut in the forest. He asked them to take him in for the night, and they welcomed him with all their hearts and begged his forgiveness for being unable to receive him as they would have wished. “We are poor folk,” they said. The angel answered, “Never mind that. I am content with whatever there is.” Now what were they to do? They had no grain to make proper bread, but pounded the bark of various trees and made bread from that. The wife made just such a loaf for their guest and put it under an earthenware baking lid to bake. Then they sat talking with their guest. When they looked to see whether the bread was done, there beneath the lid was a loaf of proper bread, risen so high that it had lifted the lid above it, and as fine as any loaf could be. When they saw it, they raised their hands to God. “Thank you, God, that we can offer our guest a meal!” After setting the loaf before him, they brought a gourd of water, but when they began to drink, there was wine in the gourd. Then the angel made the sign of the cross over the hut with his staff, and a royal palace appeared in its place, with everything in abundance. The angel blessed them and left them there, and they lived happily for the rest of their days.
