In Jianye there was a woman with a growth on her back as large as a sack holding several pecks of grain. Inside it were countless objects like cocoons or chestnuts, which rattled whenever she walked. She often begged in the marketplace. She said, “I am a village woman. My sisters and sisters-in-law and I used to share the work of raising silkworms, but year after year I alone suffered losses. So I stole a sack of cocoons from my elder sister-in-law and burned it. Before long, a sore appeared on my back, and it gradually became this growth. If I cover it with clothing, I feel stifled and can hardly breathe. I can bear it only by leaving it exposed, but it weighs on me like a sack upon my back.”
