It is told that al-Mutawakkil once took a medicinal draught, whereupon people began sending him rare treasures and gifts of every kind. Al-Fath ibn Khaqan presented him with a full-breasted virgin slave girl, one of the loveliest women of her time. With her he sent a crystal vessel containing a red drink, and a red goblet on which these verses were inscribed in black:
When the Imam has finished with his physic, and safety and recovery follow, he needs no medicine but a draught of this wine from this goblet, and to break the seal of the maiden sent him as a gift: these are fitting remedies after physic. When the girl entered the Caliph’s presence with her gifts, Yuhanna the physician was with him. On seeing the verses, the physician smiled and said, “By God, Commander of the Faithful, al-Fath knows more of the art of medicine than I do! Let the Commander of the Faithful not depart from what he has prescribed.” The Caliph accepted the physician’s advice and took the remedy as the verses directed. God restored him to health and fulfilled his hopes.
