Long ago, Middle Counselor Sadayori was courting Koshikibu no Naishi. The regent of the day was also visiting her. One night, when the regent had entered her chamber and was lying beside her, Sadayori came and knocked, apparently unaware that he was there. Someone in her household must have told him how matters stood, for he put on his shoes and left. But after taking a few steps away, he snapped open a sutra and began to chant. At the first two phrases, Koshikibu no Naishi pricked up her ears, and the man lying beside her wondered what was happening. Then, his voice sounding a little farther off, Sadayori lingered and chanted another four or five phrases. At this, she gave a moan and fell over backward. The man who lay beside her is said to have remarked afterward, “Never in my life have I suffered such unbearable humiliation.”
