The two Hua mountains were once a single mountain. It stood in the path of the Yellow River, forcing the waters to wind around it. The river god Juling, the Giant Spirit, tore apart its upper reaches with his hands and thrust its base asunder with his feet, splitting it in two to give the river free passage. Even now, the marks of his hands can be seen on Mount Hua, with every finger and the shape of his palms clearly discernible; the prints of his feet remain to this day below Mount Shouyang. This is what Zhang Heng meant in his Rhapsody on the Western Capital: “The Giant Spirit strained with all his might, palms raised high and feet thrust far, to let the river flow through its bend.”
