When Bishop Jie (Ryōgen, a native of Ōmi Province, who passed away on the third day of the first month of Eikan 3, at the age of seventy-three) was abbot, preparations were made as usual for the ordination ceremony on its appointed day, and everyone awaited his arrival. But while still on his way, he suddenly turned back. His attendants could not understand what had happened. The monks and temple officers were unrestrained in their criticism, saying, “It is unseemly to postpone so important a ceremony at the very last moment, when the day has long been fixed and there is no particular impediment.” Even novices from distant provinces had all assembled, expecting to receive the precepts. Then the abbot sent a minor steward from Yokawa as his messenger, with the announcement: “Today’s ordination is postponed. It will be held when arrangements have been made anew.” When asked why the abbot had called it off, the messenger replied, “I know nothing of his reasons. He told me only to hurry here and deliver this message.” Unable to understand, those who had gathered all dispersed. Then, at about the hour of the Sheep, a great wind arose, and the South Gate suddenly collapsed. Only then did everyone put the matter together: the abbot had foreseen what would happen and postponed the ceremony. “Had the ordination been held, so many people would have been crushed to death!” they exclaimed, loudly voicing their awe.
