Long ago, High Priest Jōkan lived at a place called Senju-in in the Western Pagoda precinct. It faced south, looking out toward Mount Ōtake. On the mountain’s northwestern flank stood a great rock whose shape resembled a dragon with its jaws agape. Many monks who lived in line with this rock died before their time. For a while no one understood why they were dying, but eventually people began to say that the rock was to blame, and they named it Poison Dragon Rock. Because of this, the Western Pagoda precinct fell ever further into ruin. At Senju-in, too, so many people died that it became difficult to remain there. When Jōkan looked at the rock, he saw that it did indeed resemble a dragon with its great jaws open. Thinking that there was truth in what people said, he faced the rock and performed rites and prayers for seven days and seven nights. Around midnight on the seventh night, the sky grew overcast and there was a tremendous trembling. Black clouds shrouded Mount Ōtake, hiding it from view. After a time the sky cleared. At dawn, when they looked toward the mountain, Poison Dragon Rock had shattered and scattered away. From then on, people lived in the Western Pagoda precinct without suffering any harm from its curse. It is said that the monks there have revered and paid homage to that abbot ever since, down to this very day. Such is the wondrous tale handed down.
