Beside the Zha River in Sui County stands Severed Snake Mound. While traveling, the Marquis of Sui came upon a great snake that had been wounded and cut through at the middle. Suspecting it was a supernatural creature, he had his men dress its wound with medicine, and the snake was able to slither away. The spot was therefore named Severed Snake Mound. A little over a year later, the snake returned with a luminous pearl in its mouth to repay his kindness. The pearl was a full inch across and pure white; at night it shone as brightly as the moon, enough to light a room. Thus it was called the “Marquis of Sui’s Pearl,” and also the “Spirit Snake Pearl” or the “Bright Moon Pearl.” South of the mound lies the pond of Ji Liang, a grand officer of Sui.
