A stag, overcome with thirst, came to a spring. As he drank, he caught sight of his reflection in the water and took pride in his antlers, admiring their size and intricate branching, but was greatly displeased with his legs, which seemed thin and weak. While he was still pondering this, a lion appeared and gave chase. The stag took flight and soon left him far behind. As long as the plain was open, he kept ahead and remained safe; but when he reached a wooded place, his antlers became entangled in the branches, and, unable to run, he was caught by the lion. As he was about to be killed, he said to himself, “Wretched creature that I am! The very legs I thought would fail me were saving my life, while the antlers I trusted so completely have brought about my death.” So too, in times of danger, the friends we mistrust have often proved our saviors, while those we trust most have proved traitors.
