Among the tales told is that in ancient times, in ages long past, there lived among the Children of Israel a righteous woman, devout and given to worship, who went each day to the place of prayer. Beside it lay an orchard, and whenever she went to pray, she would enter the orchard and perform her ablutions there. Two old men guarded the orchard, and both became enamored of the woman. They tried to seduce her, but she refused. “If you will not yield to us,” they told her, “we shall testify that you have committed adultery.” The young woman replied, “God will protect me from your wickedness.” Then they opened the orchard gate and cried out, and people came running from every direction. “What has happened?” they asked. The two men said, “We found this young woman with a young man committing a shameful act with her, but he escaped our grasp.” In those days, the people would proclaim an adulterer’s disgrace for three days and then stone the offender. So for three days they publicly proclaimed her shame. Each day, the two old men would approach her, lay their hands upon her head, and say, “Praise be to God, who has brought His punishment upon you.” When the people went to stone her, Daniel followed them. He was twelve years old, and this was his first miracle—blessings and peace be upon our Prophet and upon him. He kept following until he caught up with them and said, “Do not be hasty in stoning her. Let me first judge between them.” They set a chair for him, and he sat down and separated the two old men—he was the first to separate witnesses. He asked one of them, “What did you see?” The man gave his account of what had happened. Daniel asked, “Where in the orchard did this take place?” He replied, “On the eastern side, beneath the pear tree.” Then Daniel asked the second man what he had seen, and he too gave his account. “Where in the orchard?” Daniel asked. “On the western side, beneath the apple tree,” he replied. All this while, the young woman stood with her head and hands raised to heaven, praying to God for deliverance. Then Almighty God sent down a thunderbolt of punishment that burned the two old men, and He made the young woman’s innocence manifest. This was the first of the miracles granted to Daniel, the Prophet of God, peace be upon him.
