Heracles was walking along a narrow road. Seeing something on the ground that looked like an apple, he tried to crush it. When he saw that it had doubled in size, he attacked it all the more fiercely, striking it with his club. But it swelled so large that it blocked the road. Throwing down his club, he stood there in astonishment. Then Athena appeared to him and said, “Stop, brother. This is Quarrelsomeness and Strife. If you leave it alone without fighting it, it stays as it was at first; but when you fight it, it swells like this.” Quarrels and strife are the cause of great harm.
