Once upon a time there was a little girl who was stubborn and inquisitive, and whenever her parents told her to do something, she would not obey. How could things turn out well for her? One day she said to her parents, "I've heard so much about Frau Trude that I want to go and see her. People say her house looks so strange, and they tell of such curious things inside it that I've grown quite eager to see for myself." Her parents strictly forbade her to go, saying, "Frau Trude is a wicked woman who does ungodly things, and if you go to her, you will no longer be our child." But the girl paid no heed to her parents' warning and went to Frau Trude all the same. When she arrived, Frau Trude asked, "Why are you so pale?" — "Oh," she answered, trembling all over, "I was so frightened by what I saw." — "What did you see?" — "I saw a black man on your stairs." — "That was a charcoal burner." — "Then I saw a green man." — "That was a huntsman." — "After that I saw a blood-red man." — "That was a butcher." — "Oh, Frau Trude, I was terrified. I looked through the window and didn't see you, but the devil with a fiery head." — "Oho," she said, "then you have seen the witch in all her finery! I've been waiting for you and longing for you for such a long time. You shall give me light." Then she turned the girl into a block of wood and threw it into the fire. And when it was blazing brightly, she sat down beside it, warmed herself, and said, "Now that's a bright light!"
