In the second year of Emperor Hui of Han, at dawn on the guiyou day of the first month, two dragons appeared in Wenling Well in the eastern ward of the Lanling court precinct. They departed on the night of the yihai day. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When the virtuous suffer harm, the portent is dragons appearing in a well.” It also says: “When punishments are cruel and brutal, a black dragon emerges from a well.”
