The women of the Xindu magistrate’s household were plagued by fear and fell ill one after another. He asked Lu to divine the cause. Lu said, “At the western end of your north hall lie two dead men: one holds a spear, the other a bow and arrows. Their heads are inside the wall, their feet outside it. The man with the spear strikes at the head, causing such heaviness and pain that the sufferer cannot lift it. The man with the bow and arrows shoots at the chest and belly, causing a gnawing pain within that makes eating and drinking impossible. By day they drift about; at night they come to afflict the sick. That is why the women are so terrified.” They dug beneath the room, and eight feet down they did indeed find two coffins. One contained a spear; the other, a horn bow and arrows. They were so old that all the wood had rotted away, leaving only the iron and horn intact. The bones were then taken twenty li from the city and reburied, and there was no further illness.
