During the Jingchu era of the Wei dynasty, strange things happened in the household of a clerk in Xianyang County. Every night, for no apparent reason, they heard clapping and voices calling to one another. They kept watch but saw nothing. One night, the clerk’s mother grew tired as she worked and lay down to sleep. After a while, a voice beneath the stove called out, “Why hasn’t Wenyue come?” The pillow beneath her head replied, “I’m being used as a pillow and cannot go. You can come here and drink with me.” At daybreak, they found that the voice had come from a rice paddle. They gathered the things up and burned them, and the strange occurrences ceased.
