Emperor Wu of Han dearly loved Lady Li, and after her death he could not cease longing for her. Li Shaoweng, a magician from Qi, claimed that he could summon her spirit. That night he set up curtained tents and lit lamps and candles, then had the emperor sit in another tent and watch from afar. The emperor saw a beautiful woman within the curtains, resembling Lady Li. She moved about the tent, now sitting, now walking, but he was not allowed to approach for a closer look. His grief and longing grew still deeper, and he composed a poem: “Is it she? Is it not? I stand and gaze—so graceful, so willowy! Why does she come so slowly, so late?” He ordered the musicians of the Music Bureau to set it to music and sing it to the accompaniment of strings.
