During the reign of the founding ruler of Wu, Lu Jingshu, the governor of Jian’an, sent men to fell a great camphor tree. After a few strokes of the axe, blood suddenly flowed from it. When the trunk was severed, a creature with a human face and a dog’s body emerged from within. “This is called a Penghou,” Jingshu said. He then had it cooked and ate it. It tasted like dog meat. The Illustrated Guide of Baize says: “The spirit of a tree is called a Penghou. It resembles a black dog without a tail and may be cooked and eaten.”
