Beside the flowing waters at Lu Pavilion in Longshu County, Lujiang, stood a great tree, scores of zhang tall, in which thousands of yellow birds regularly nested. Once, during a prolonged drought, the elders said to one another, “There is often a yellow aura about that tree. Perhaps a spirit dwells there, and we may pray to it for rain.” So they brought wine and dried meat to the pavilion. A widow named Li Xian rose in the night and suddenly saw a woman in her room, dressed in embroidered robes. The woman introduced herself: “I am Huangzu, the spirit of the tree. I can summon clouds and rain. Because you are pure of heart, I shall help you make your living. This morning the elders came wishing to pray for rain. I have already petitioned the Heavenly Emperor, and tomorrow at noon there will be heavy rain.” At the appointed hour, rain indeed fell, and a shrine was built for the spirit. Xian said, “Since you gentlemen are here, and I live near the water, I ought to provide a few carp.” No sooner had she spoken than dozens of carp flew in and gathered below the hall. Everyone seated there was struck with awe and fear. This went on for more than a year. Then the spirit said, “A great war is coming. I must now bid you farewell.” She left a jade ring, saying, “Keep this, and you will be able to escape the calamity.” Later, when Liu Biao and Yuan Shu attacked one another, the people of Longshu all moved away. Only the neighborhood where Xian lived was spared the ravages of war.
