Later, in the tenth month of Emperor Ai’s reign, a fallen log in Suiyang Township, Xiping County, Runan, sprouted a branch shaped like a human figure. Its body was bluish yellow and its face white, with a moustache and hair on its head. It gradually grew larger, reaching a total length of six cun and one fen. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When royal virtue declines and a man of low station is about to rise, wood will grow in human form.” Afterward came Wang Mang’s usurpation.
