During the reign of Emperor Ling, there were two trees of heaven in the auxiliary workshop of the Right Imperial Workshop, each about four chi tall. Overnight, a branch on one of them suddenly grew to more than a zhang in length and an armspan in girth, taking the form of a man of the Hu peoples, complete with head, eyes, sideburns, beard, and hair. In the fifth year, on the renwu day of the tenth month, locust trees beside the main hall, each six or seven armspans in girth, uprooted themselves and stood upside down, their roots above and branches below. Again, during the Zhongping era, six or seven li northwest of Chang’an, a human face with growing sideburns appeared inside a hollow tree. According to the “Great Plan,” all these were instances of “wood failing to bend and straighten.”
