This, too, happened long ago. There was a boy living among the monks on Mount Hiei. One evening, with nothing much to do, the monks said, “Come, let us make some rice cakes.” The boy listened eagerly. But he thought it would look bad to stay awake waiting for them to finish, so he settled down off to one side and pretended to sleep while he waited. At last there was a bustle that suggested the cakes were ready. “Surely they will wake me,” he thought, and lay waiting. A monk said, “Excuse me. Please wake up.” Delighted though he was, the boy thought that answering at the very first call might make them suspect he had been waiting all along. He decided to answer when they called once more, and went on pretending to sleep. Then he heard someone say, “No, do not wake him. The little fellow has fallen fast asleep.” “Oh, what a dreadful business!” he thought, wishing they would call him just once more. But all he heard was the steady smacking of lips as they ate. At his wits’ end, after a very long silence, he finally called out, “Yes!” The monks laughed without end.
