When Zhuge Ke of Wu was governor of Danyang, he once went hunting and came upon a creature between two mountains. It resembled a small child and held out its hand as though wishing to take someone by the hand. Ke ordered a man to take its hand and lead it away from its native ground. As soon as it left that ground, it died. Afterward, his aides asked how he had known what to do, believing his insight divine. Ke said, “This is recorded in the Illustrations of Bai Ze: ‘Between two mountains there dwells a spirit shaped like a small child. When it sees a person, it holds out its hand as though wishing to take that person by the hand. It is called a Xinang. Lead it away from its native ground, and it dies.’ There is no need to marvel at me as though I possessed divine powers. You gentlemen simply happen not to have read of it.”
