There was once an Arab who had a guest come to stay. He slaughtered two chickens to be cooked for him. As his wife cooked them, she kept picking off a piece and eating it, until both chickens were gone and nothing remained but a neck. She gave it to her little boy. The boy cried and said, “Give me some more!” She slapped him and said, “Enough of that vile, accursed habit your father taught you!” The guest heard her, turned around, and asked, “What habit did his father teach him?” She said, “His father has a razor. Whenever a guest comes, he cuts off his ears and roasts them for the boy to eat.” When the guest heard this, he picked up his shoes and slipped away. Just as he was leaving the house, the master of the house came back. “Why has the guest gone?” he asked. She told him, “He’s a wicked man! He snatched the chickens out of the pot and ran off.” The Arab went after him, shouting, “Give me one and keep the other!” The fleeing man called back, “If you catch me, you can have them both!” The man running away was thinking of his ears, while the master of

the house was thinking of the chickens.
