They say that cicadas were once human beings who lived before the Muses came into being. When the Muses were born and song first appeared, some of the people of that age were so overcome with delight that they sang on, neglecting food and drink, until they died without even noticing. From them the race of cicadas later sprang, receiving this gift from the Muses: from birth they need no nourishment, but begin singing at once, without food or drink, and sing until they die.
