Yang Gongbo was a native of Luoyang County in Yong. He originally made his living as a broker and was deeply devoted to his parents. When they died, he buried them on Mount Wuzhong and made his home there. The mountain rose eighty li, and there was no water on its heights, so Yang fetched water and offered it freely to travelers at the head of the slope. All who passed that way drank it. After three years, a man came to drink and gave him a peck of small stones, telling him to plant them in good, level ground high up on the mountain, where there were rocks. “Jade will grow among them,” he said. Yang had not yet married, and the man added, “In time, you will find a fine wife.” With that, he vanished. Yang planted the stones. Over the next several years, he went from time to time to look at them and saw nuggets of jade growing upon the stones, but no one else knew of it. There was a daughter of the Xu clan, a prominent family in Youbeiping, who was known for her virtue. Many men sought her hand, but the family refused most of them. Yang decided to try asking for her himself. The Xu family laughed, thinking him mad, and said in jest, “Bring us a pair of white jade discs, and we will consent to the marriage.” Yang went to the field where he had planted the jade and found five pairs of white jade discs, which he presented as betrothal gifts. The Xu family was greatly astonished and gave him their daughter in marriage. When the Son of Heaven heard of this marvel, he appointed Yang a grandee. At each of the four corners of the place where Yang had planted the jade, a great stone pillar was erected, each one zhang tall. The one qing of land within was named “Jade Field.”
