In Minzhong there was a man named Xu Deng, who had been a woman before transforming into a man. He and Zhao Bing of Dongyang were both skilled in the occult arts. During a time of warfare and unrest, they met beside a stream, each taking pride in his powers. Deng first cast a spell that stopped the stream from flowing; Bing then cast one that made the willows put forth new shoots. The two looked at each other and laughed. Deng was the elder, and Bing took him as his master. After Deng died, Bing traveled east to Chang’an, where the people did not yet know him. He climbed onto a thatched roof, set up a cauldron, and lit a fire to cook. The owner was astonished and alarmed, but Bing merely smiled and said nothing. The house suffered no damage.
