Tunisische Märchen und Gedichte

Hans Stumme

Hans Stumme published the Tunisian tales in a historical Latin-script phonetic transcription of spoken Arabic. This record is valuable as a document of the language and its oral tradition, but it uses a nineteenth-century scholarly system that is not readily accessible to today’s reader.

Kako smo pripravili besedila

We imported 14 prose texts, explicitly numbered from 1 to 14 in the first volume’s table of contents. Poems are not included. We retain the historical transcription as the original; the Slovenian translation must take into account that the text is not German, but Tunisian Arabic written in the Latin alphabet.

Vir, izdaja in pravice

A facsimile of the first volume, published in 1893, from Wikimedia Commons has been used. Stumme died in 1936, and the edition is in the public domain. During editorial review, the text should be read alongside the introduction, which explains the transcription.
