Once upon a time there was a little girl whose father and mother had died, and she was so poor that she no longer had a little room to live in or a little bed to sleep in, and at last had nothing left but the clothes on her back and a small piece of bread in her hand, which a kind soul had given her. But she was good and devout. And since she had been forsaken by all the world, she went out into the fields, trusting in the dear Lord.

There she met a poor man who said, "Oh, give me something to eat. I am so hungry." She handed him the whole piece of bread and said, "May God bless it to you," and went on her way. Then a child came along, crying, "My head is so cold. Give me something to cover it with." So she took off her cap and gave it to the child. And when she had walked a little farther, she met another child who had no bodice to wear and was shivering, so she gave the child her own. Farther on, another begged for a little skirt, and she gave that away too. At last she came to a forest, and by then it had grown dark. Another child came and asked for a little shift, and the devout girl thought, "It is dark now, and no one can see you. You can give your shift away." So she took it off and gave that away as well.

And as she stood there with nothing left at all, the stars suddenly fell from the sky, and every one was a shining silver thaler. And although she had given away her little shift, she was wearing a new one, made of the very finest linen. She gathered the thalers into it and was rich for the rest of her life.
