During the Yuankang era, people throughout the realm began imitating one another in using black staffs for support beneath their arms. Later, they began fitting these staffs with metal ferrules, planting them upright whenever they stopped. In the reigns of Emperors Huai and Min, the imperial house suffered many calamities, and the central capital fell to ruin. Emperor Yuan, then a vassal prince, established his virtuous rule in the east and sustained the realm, thus fulfilling the omen of the supporting staffs.
