Then the third slave girl stepped forward after the second had withdrawn, and said: “The subject of renunciation is vast indeed, but I shall recount some of what comes to mind from the sayings of the pious forebears. One of those who knew God said: ‘I welcome death, though I am not certain that it will bring repose. Yet I know that death stands between a person and further deeds, so I hope that my good deeds will be multiplied and my evil deeds brought to an end.’ Whenever Ata al-Sulami finished his testament, he would shudder and tremble and weep bitterly. When asked why, he replied: ‘I am about to face a momentous matter: to stand before God Most High and act according to the testament.’ Likewise, Ali Zayn al-Abidin ibn al-Husayn would tremble when he rose to pray. Asked about this, he said: ‘Do you know before whom I stand, and whom I address?’ It is related that a blind man lived near Sufyan al-Thawri. When the month of Ramadan came, he would go out to lead the people in prayer, falling silent and taking his time. Sufyan said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, the people of the Quran will be brought forth and distinguished from all others by a mark of special honor.’ Sufyan also said: ‘If the soul were settled in the heart as it ought to be, the heart would soar with joy and longing for Paradise, and with sorrow and fear of the Fire.’ And it is related that Sufyan al-Thawri said: ‘To look upon the face of a tyrant is a sin.’”
