She said: It has reached me that in the days of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid, Commander of the Faithful, there lived in the city of Baghdad a man called Sindbad the Porter. He was a poor man who earned his living carrying loads upon his head. One day, as it happened, he was carrying a heavy load in the fierce heat. Weary beneath his burden, drenched in sweat, and sorely oppressed by the heat, he came to the door of a merchant’s house. The ground before it had been swept and sprinkled with water, and a pleasant breeze was blowing there. Beside the door stood a broad stone bench, and the porter set his load upon it to rest and take the air. But dawn overtook Shahrazad, and she fell silent, leaving off her permitted tale.
