1. When Zeus came of age, he enlisted the help of Metis, daughter of Oceanus. She gave Cronus a potion to swallow, which forced him to vomit up first the stone and then the children he had swallowed. With their help, Zeus waged war against Cronus and the Titans. After they had fought for ten years, Gaia foretold that Zeus would win if he took as his allies those who had been cast into Tartarus. He therefore killed Campe, who guarded them in their bonds, and set them free. Then the Cyclopes gave Zeus thunder, lightning, and the thunderbolt; Pluto a helmet; and Poseidon a trident. Armed with these, they overcame the Titans, imprisoned them in Tartarus, and appointed the Hundred-Handed Ones as their guards. They themselves cast lots for sovereignty: Zeus received dominion over heaven, Poseidon over the sea, and Pluto over the realm of Hades.

2. The offspring of the Titans were as follows: Oceanus and Tethys had the Oceanids—Asia, Styx, Electra, Doris, Eurynome, Amphitrite, and Metis; Coeus and Phoebe had Asteria and Leto; Hyperion and Theia had Eos, Helios, and Selene; Crius and Eurybia, daughter of Pontus, had Astraeus, Pallas, and Perses;

3. Iapetus and Asia had Atlas, who bears heaven on his shoulders, Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Menoetius, whom Zeus struck with a thunderbolt during the war with the Titans and hurled into Tartarus.

4. Cronus and Philyra also had Chiron, the centaur of twofold nature; Eos and Astraeus had the winds and the stars; Perses and Asteria had Hecate; and Pallas and Styx had Nike, Cratos, Zelus, and Bia.

5. Zeus made the water of Styx, which flows from a rock in Hades, the water by which oaths were sworn, granting her this honor because she and her children had fought alongside him against the Titans.

6. Pontus and Gaia had Phorcus, Thaumas, Nereus, Eurybia, and Ceto. Thaumas and Electra had Iris and the Harpies, Aello and Ocypete; Phorcus and Ceto had the Phorcides and the Gorgons, of whom we shall speak when we tell the story of Perseus;

7. Nereus and Doris had the Nereids, whose names are Cymothoe, Speio, Glauconome, Nausithoe, Halie, Erato, Sao, Amphitrite, Eunice, Thetis, Eulimene, Agave, Eudore, Doto, Pherusa, Galatea, Actaea, Pontomedusa, Hippothoe, Lysianassa, Cymo, Eione, Halimede, Plexaure, Eucrante, Proto, Calypso, Panope, Cranto, Neomeris, Hipponoe, Ianira, Polynome, Autonoe, Melite, Dione, Nesaea, Dero, Euagore, Psamathe, Eumolpe, Ione, Dynamene, Ceto, and Limnoreia.
