Dai Yang, courtesy name Guoliu, was a native of Changcheng in Wuxing. At the age of twelve, he fell ill and died, but came back to life five days later. He said, “When I died, Heaven appointed me keeper of its wine stores and bestowed talismans and sacred registers upon me. I was given attendants, banners, and standards, and was led up the mountains of Penglai, Kunlun, Jishi, Taishi, Lu, and Heng, among others. Afterward, I was sent back.” He had an extraordinary understanding of divination and omens. Knowing that Wu was about to fall, he pleaded illness rather than accept office and returned to his native district. On reaching Laixiang, he passed the shrine of Laozi and recognized it as a place he had visited on his errands during those days when he was dead, though the things he had seen then were no longer there. He therefore asked Ying Feng, the keeper of the repository, “More than twenty years ago, was there a man riding east who passed the shrine of Lord Lao without dismounting, then fell from his horse and died before reaching the bridge?” Feng said there had been. Most of the matters Yang asked about proved to accord with his recollections.
