A crow was offering a sacrifice to Athena and invited a dog to the feast. The dog said to her, “Why waste your offerings? The goddess hates you so much that she has stripped you of all credibility even among your fellow birds.” The crow replied, “That is all the more reason to sacrifice to her, so that she may be reconciled with me.” The fable shows that many people do not hesitate to do good to their enemies for the sake of gain.
