Liu Chifu dreamed that Lord Jiang summoned him to serve as his chief clerk. With little time left before he was due to report, he went to the temple and pleaded, “My mother is old and my son is young; my concern for them is too deep to set aside. I beg you to release me from this charge. Wei Guo of Kuaiji is a man of many talents, well versed in serving the gods. Allow me to recommend him in my place.” He then knocked his head against the ground until he bled. The temple priest said, “It is your service in particular that I desire. Who is this Wei Guo, that you should recommend him?” Chifu persisted in his plea, but permission was never granted. Soon afterward, he died.
