Long ago, Zhuanxu had three sons who became plague demons after their deaths. One dwelt in the Yangtze River and became the malaria demon; one dwelt in the Ruo River and became the wangliang demon; and one dwelt in people’s homes, delighting in frightening their young children, and became the little demon. Thus, at the beginning of each year, the Fangxiangshi, the chief exorcist, was ordered to lead the great nuo rite to drive away the plague demons.
