This, too, happened long ago. Shimotsuke no Takemasa and Hata no Kaneyuki had been sent to ride in the retinue at the Kamo Festival. On their return, Lord Hosshōji was watching at Murasakino. Learning that His Excellency was looking on, Takemasa and Kaneyuki took particular care over their appearance as they rode past. Takemasa passed first, making a splendid show of himself, and Kaneyuki followed. Each was impressive in his own way, beyond description. His Excellency watched them and commanded, “Ride north once more,” so they rode north again. They could not remain there, however, and had to come back south. This time Kaneyuki rode south first. Everyone waited, expecting Takemasa to follow, but for some time he was nowhere to be seen. Just as they were wondering what had happened, it turned out that he was riding along the eastern side of the curtain hung opposite them. While they were still waiting and asking, “Where is he? Where is he?” he rode south with only the base of his court cap showing above the curtain. “What presence of mind, even in a man of such humble station!” everyone said in praise of him—or so the story goes.
