An old man once cut some wood on a mountain, hoisted it onto his shoulders, and set off. After walking a long way beneath his burden, he grew exhausted, laid the wood down, and called upon Death to come. Death appeared at once and asked why he had summoned him. The old man replied, “So that you can lift this load and put it back on my shoulders.” The fable shows that everyone clings to life: even when beset by countless dangers and seemingly longing for death, a person still far prefers life to death.
