In Han times, there was a river called the Jin in Buwei County, Yongchang Commandery. Its waters gave off poisonous vapors, and only in the eleventh and thirteenth months was it at all possible to ford it; from the first month through the tenth, it could not be crossed. Those who tried would fall ill and die. Within the vapors lurked some malevolent thing, invisible to the eye, though it seemed to make a sound. It was as if something were hurled at its victims: when it struck a tree, the wood snapped; when it struck a person, it caused injury. The local people called it “ghost shot.” Thus, when the commandery had criminals, it banished them to guard the Jin; within ten days, all were dead.
