In the autumn of Emperor Cheng’s reign, fish no more than five cun long rained down on Xindu. The following spring, four enormous fish appeared in Beihai, each six zhang long and one zhang high. During Emperor Ai’s reign, seven enormous fish appeared at Pingdu in Donglai, each eight zhang long and one zhang and one chi high. All were dead. During Emperor Ling’s reign, two enormous fish appeared in the sea off Donglai, eight or nine zhang long and more than two zhang high. Jing Fang’s Commentary on the Changes says: “When giant fish repeatedly appear in the sea, wicked men are advanced and worthy men are kept at a distance.”
